The sun sets on another day…
It was cold. Really cold, but the sun shone through and the sunset seemed to call to the sky, and in an instant there was beauty. Cold beauty, but still it made me shiver.
I’ve had arguments with my son before about the meaning of things. No, I’m not talking about the meaning of things like life or who is sitting at the top of the mountain in a Lotus position giving us all wisdom, instead I’m talking about the meaning of the different things that we have in our life. To me, having the best car or the best of everything isn’t necessarily as important as the memories that are associated with different things. It is with that in mind that over the next several days I will tell a series of stories based on things until I meet someone who makes me write about them, which will probably be tomorrow but who knows I’ll be stuck in a car for a while.
What you see here is a totem. It was given to me by a young woman who was very special to me when I was a young man. She was a girl, she was a friend, she was a girlfriend, but we never seemed to really go the distance. Of course we hung out, we went to movies, we walked in the park, swam in a pool, and basically enjoyed life.
Still, she really wasn’t looking to be in a relationship even though she considered me a relationship. When you figure that one out let me know. Instead, we would go to a movie and then I wouldn’t see her for weeks. You have to remember that right before I went to college there really weren’t any easy ways to get in touch with each other. No cell phones, pagers, or computers of any type that could talk to each other. Instead, we had to see ourselves in person, or use a Rotary dial phone or maybe a touch tone and hope the other side was at home. She never was.
We went back and forth for about a year. It was a lot of good fun and as I look back I can think of nothing but good things except that it didn’t last. As we both went to college and knew we wouldn’t see each other she gave me this totem to remember her, and I have.
It’s something little that unlocks a lot of good things and makes me feel like the world can be a better place.

So as the sun sets on another day, it was a good time and a long time ago. I tried to find her again, that she is pretty much disappeared. Maybe one day we’ll run into each other on the side of the road and both be too old to recognize each other. At least I have this totem and all of the memories and I will continue to remember, no matter what.
