The sun sets on another day…
It was a cold night. As sunset fell across the sky I was with my trusty snowblower. Still digging out of a forever pile of snow. Tomorrow there may be more, but as the sky shimmered into darkness I knew I was catching up.
On Saturdays I am sometimes involved in a writing group. I’ve actually been members of several but a group led by Allegra Houston and James Nave is a staple and I have been going there for years. Many writing groups are very similar, they use prompts and approaches to potentially unlock your mind and allow you to write with pure imagination. I find myself drawn to this group four it’s approach and for the diverse thought that I often experience there. It challenges me to think and as I do I find myself in touch with my more creative soul.
I have found there is a soul here, a small group of people that have a soul. I appreciate the interactions and appreciate the points of view that they represent. As we write we do not always agree but that is unimportant, instead as we write our minds open and we see inside and all the things that come with it.
Today there was an equipment malfunction and as we sat in a room full of a significant number of people the prompt became one of darkness. The darkness was something that all of us understood in different ways. I wrote my piece and as usual it was much deeper than it seemed. The piece I wrote focused on how people didn’t always understand and how the darkness and the edge of darkness affects me. It points out that many people have never experienced the edge of death or the violence of man up close and personal and also many people have not seen past all that is there and a little more. I liked my piece and it will be out someday in some of my writings.
At the end of the group time there is a discussion, and during that discussion I reflected on the different pieces I had heard in my subgroup. They seem to have a common theme and it reminded me of a movie from long ago called The Point. This movie is available free on YouTube if you’re interested in watching it and it is very enlightening from a lot of different areas.
I walked away feeling good which is the purpose of a writing group. Yes you hope to walk away with magnificent writing, but you also hope to walk away with a sense of purpose and a feeling that there’s something more than just what’s on the surface. I can check that box.
So as the sun sets on another day, it was a good day. As night continues to fall I continue to work away the snow and make everything a little better little bit at a time. Maybe that’s what we all need, just a little better and a little better until it’s a lot better. We can make the world better just by listening, no matter what.
