The sun sets on another day…
It was a wonderful sunset. The light shone bright and beautiful and my eyes were overcome with a spec of sentiment,. It made the day a little better.
I find myself thinking about people, places, and things. I think grammar rock referred to these as nouns, well I know they did, but I like to think of them as experiences. I enjoyed thinking about this and thought about how this weekend I went across the state, and it was good.
It’s funny if you think about it, across the street, across the state, across the city or even across the universe all have a similar connotation. You are changing your point of view. It’s hard to have the same perspective when your perspective is different. The world looks like a much smaller place and even the universe can look smaller if you tilt your head the right way.
It’s here that I think people miss quite often. If we stay in the same place our entire life we may have the best understanding of where we are than anybody else possibly could. As we expand the places we have been and the people we have seen we slowly change our perspective. We may have a different perspective than somebody else, but our perspective is opened up by the fact that we’re not just seeing it from one point of view.
It’s here that I find a challenge sometimes. I listen to people talk and sometimes they are they are passionate in their plea for some type of understanding. This has become particularly true in yet another election year. People find themselves letting other people know how they feel when they don’t have the perspective that the other person does. How can you agree if you don’t understand the point of view? It’s a very tough question.
I have no good answer except that you are you and they are they and there’s a whole lot of in betweens and a whole lot of people that don’t necessarily understand everything that we know and everything that we need to know. The complexities grow the farther apart you get and I would hazard to say if we were across the universe it would be nearly impossible to immediately understand who we were talking to, there is no point of reference.
Maybe the answer is as simple as opening your ears and listening opening your eyes and seeing and opening your mind and feeling. Who knows, maybe if we were to talk to someone across the universe their primary sense would be the sense of emotion and all of the millions upon millions of emotions that we feel. How would we come to a common understanding about something like anger, love, or despair?
Take a moment and consider, then take a deep breath and have a cup of tea if you like.
So as the sun sets on another day, I hope you find all that you’re looking for in others. I hope you enjoy the places that you go. I hope you enjoy the things that you have and the things that you experience. Mostly I hope you find a way to listen to people and try to understand more than who you are. If you can do so, in the end it will be you that make a difference, no matter what.
