The sun sets on another day…
I enjoyed the sunset as the sky slowly fell in a cool western sky. This summer has been cooler than normal and each day offers a chance to wear several different types of clothes.
I was talking to somebody today about staying in my lane. I’m not very good at it, probably terrible. You see the world is a very complicated place. If you try to write a math problem on it, it would probably stretch on to the moon and beyond. This is not because everything is not predictable instead it is because of the significant number of different permutations based on people places and things. Just when you think you have it figured out there is something else really going on.
I have tried to carry that forward into my writing. It was an interesting conversation with one young lady at my last event as we discussed fear and how I tried to weave fear into unique situations. She had read all of the stories in one of my books and told me, “your stories aren’t necessarily scary, well some of them are, but all of them make you think”. We laughed and talked about the stories that scared her and then we discussed how different things scare different people. She was engaged and quite open that I was absolutely correct and most of the scary books she reads aren’t very scary to her.
That got me to the thinking part. As we talked about it she explained that even if she wasn’t afraid there were things that she had to consider in my stories and because of that she enjoyed reading them all. I can say for sure I will take that. I know that I am not scared of any of the situations in any of my stories so I can’t expect other people to be scared of all of them or really any of them, but if one person opens their mind to possibilities it makes me laugh and smile. After all if I stayed in my lane I would just try to scare people or excite people or make people feel for whatever genre I am writing for. If not that’s OK.
There is room to think, and the young person involved in this discussion got me thinking, it is ok to write to inspire and incite, and to make the world a better place, and if you do it so people remember at least one word, that’s pretty good.
So as the sun sets on another day, I like thinking. Sometimes I think that is the best thing to do, and as I do it, I think I will have some fun along the way. Have fun each day, and enjoy your moments, no matter what.
Sleep sweet, love life, and keep being awesome…
