If you only look…

The sun sets on another day…

Today as I drove home I saw people cursing in their cars. Yelling at nature and the situations going on around them. It is rare that I would see someone calmly driving and instead they were seeing just how bad things were to them. I saw people today who looked at their situations and saw the glass not only half empty, but most of the way empty, and I tried with some to help them look from a different perspective, and see how full their glass actually was. I saw people who were mean or rude to others but I saw how mad they were at themselves instead. Somewhere in it all after plowing for over 3 hours and hitting a paper that jammed my blades, I too felt it well up.

I was faced with a choice. For a moment I felt the anger and allowed it to come out, and then I realized as I had so many years ago it simply was not worth it. I calmed myself down and let the anger fade away. Why? Because it wasn’t that bad! Sure, I may have to spend some money, sure, it may be broken really bad, but I was not hurt, and it can be fixed. There are a host of reasons to be thankful, not the least of which was I had a shovel and needed the cardio anyway.

It is often misquoted to Abraham Lincoln that if you “Look for the bad in Mankind expecting to find it, you most surely will” and I often used this quote as a primer to show that things are more positive if you look for the positive. No matter where it came from it is most surely true. If you look for the bad you will find it, but if you look for the good in people, places, and things, it is there!

Don’t believe me?

It was horrible outside where I live today, right? Wrong, it was beautiful. The world is just getting worse, right? Wrong, the world is what you make it, live you own life not the life of everyone else. A broken snowblower is bad, right? Err, well, err, no, it gives me reason to make things better another way. Even if you doubt, even if you are covered with reasons to be negative, there is a shining reason out there somewhere to say things are OK. Don’t just read it, don’t just think about it, do it. Make today a good day and every day that follows.

So as the sun sets on another day, well, I have a heater running to make the garage warm so I can go fix my snowblower. It will be fine, there will be no issues with it or anything about it because even if it is totaled, there will be a solution that works. I believe it and as such, it is real. If your day is bad, and if you look, the good is there. Find that good, nurture it, and make it yours, no matter what.

Sleep sweet, love life, and live for the best day you can have…
