The last walk…

The sun sets on another day…

Sunset

Last night I took out the trash and walked to the corner. The trash walk is about 150 yards and it was one of the hardest walks I ever took last night. Last week was the last time Luna and I walked this walk together. She was slower than usual, but still kept up and held her frisbee the whole way, not playing as much as she normally did.

I knew it was bad when she didn’t want to play, but I did not think it would be as it turned out. We never do. After the x-rays her body was riddled with cancer, and her breathing would get worse by the moment. She passed on Tuesday morning and last night my 150 yard walk that I had made with her for years, was the last one. I know, depressing. Sorry. I will keep it to a minimum now.

The original idea behind 29000 sunsets was to consider well that if you only had 29000 sunsets and it was day 28999 what would you do differently? Why not today? With that in mind, if I had known Luna would be gone this week, would I have done things differently? After our walk last week I sat on the floor and watched tv, with her head in my lap, so perhaps not. Let’s apply it more broadly.

If there is no tomorrow. Who do you need to call? Who do you need to hug? What thing did you need to do? Why are you waiting? Sure, there are reasons sometimes we don’t engage our every whim, but I am not talking about the fringe items, I am talking about what will you miss the most. What little thing will make you feel as though you missed out.

I stepped into today knowing there could have been one more trick, one more moment, a few more hugs. Still, I am ok. Why? Because every day I try to engage everyone I can. Every day I push to be alive. It is time for you to do the same. No, it is not an order, no, I am not trying to control you, it is just a suggestion. One I hope you will consider.

I miss the mark sometimes. There are people who are important to me that I don’t talk to enough. I will work on that, you do it too. Let’s remember, especially now, that there is no promise of tomorrow. Zero, none.

So as the sun sets on another day, we have to keep our minds clear and push for more. We need to fight our windmills and keep going, and we need to let people know they are important, and animals too! Be that person who lives life to its fullest everyday, and make your world the best one it can be, no matter what.

Sleep sweet, love with all your heart, and take a walk from time to time…
