The sun sets on another day…
I watched the sky as I watched people around me. A couple of period before me and for a moment I thought they would block my shot of this stunning sunset, but maybe they became part of it. It was beautiful no matter how you slice it.
There’s a song that says that love is a second hand emotion. I did a search and love is mentioned in a significant number of 29,000 Sunset posts. Of the nearly 4,000 times that I have written in this blog over 3,000 contain the word love. I am now struggling with the idea that perhaps I overuse that word, or perhaps not.
Early on in 29,000 sunsets, I didn’t have a ton of structure. I hadn’t built a repeatable process, I hadn’t put together something that could be dissected and might actually mean something. Some of my posts were maybe 200 words, some only a hundred. There came a day that someone I love told me that perhaps a low number of words meant that I was running out of things to write about. Every day that drove me to try to do more.
As I look back now I am looking at a post that has been viewed several thousand times and only defines passion. A simple definition and a simple portion of love.
Another post simply says that we should love, live, and enjoy the moment. Yes that certainly sounds like me, and this post focuses on the movie Goosebumps. Somehow I went from one to another.
There are also some posts that my daughter did and I followed up with trying to define the essence of love. How do you love? Why do you love? Why do you love who you love?
These are all good questions, but I also ask how often should you say you love someone? If you look at movies like Star Wars, if you tell someone you love them, they will promptly tell you that they know. I once had a girlfriend tell me that I didn’t really love her, I just liked to say that I loved people. Maybe I do.
I have no qualms about telling most people how much I love them, and there are some people that just have to understand that I love them and will say it when I do, no rhyme, no reason, it will just make sense at the time.
I also once told someone I love them and later had to walk away, this is difficult because there are those of us in the world that love truly, madly, and deeply, and it’s hard for us to unlove. In that particular case the situation changed love to hate and perhaps more.
In the middle of this I have to come up to the definition so I will say that love is an uncontrollable emotion. Not near uncontrollable. It is an attraction of mind and more. Depending on the direction it could be intensely personal, or completely platonic. There are people I love deeply but I don’t necessarily tell them as often. There are people that I say those three words to, where others have far deeper meaning. In the end I hope those who know, know. And if they don’t realize, they just don’t understand.

So as the sun sets on another day, remember that you are part of the equation and in order to love you must love yourself with an intensity that can’t easily be described. If you do, love others as deeply as you love yourself and let them know every once in awhile. I think you’ll be impressed, no matter what.
