The sun sets on another day…
I look to the sky and felt a tear crossed my eye as the orange and reds scattered across the clouds. There was beauty everywhere and I was in awe.
There are an amazing number of people who purport to be empaths. The idea of being an empath is someone who can connect on an emotional level with another individual. Many people use the definition to explain sensitivity but it is more complex than just that. An empath pays attention, an empath knows.
There are many others that have high levels of acuity in picking out key elements of other people’s emotions. They understand how the emotions work and understand how to interact with those people based on emotions. They are not necessarily the same.
As I looked at the definition of empathy I realized that somebody wrote it to be all encompassing. It covers a lot of different ways that we can pay attention to each other and in doing so how we can understand empathy as a whole. Perhaps empathy is an overused word that describes a tremendous variety of different aspects of what we would consider real empathy. Perhaps empathy needs to be defined a little further.
Maybe it’s time that we think about that word a little more heavenly and instead of claiming empathy we understand that there are shades to the level of infinity as to how people understand each other. Maybe we need to pay attention and understand that sometimes what we think is empathy isn’t exactly the same as what someone else thinks.
Pay attention to others. Pay attention to how others see the world. Try to feel what they feel so you can understand how things work more effectively. In the end perspective matters and as we go through our 29,000 sunsets, maybe we need to pay attention to that just a little bit more. We’re all in this together.
