The sun sets on another day…
It has been a whirlwind month. The sun is setting on this last day of October, and the last day of a series of events supporting indie authors. As the month has passed I have been impressed with people, places and things. I have gotten more than I expected, and less than I expected, and still, the sun rises and sets, treating us all to its beauty.
Expectation is a tough word. It can be defined a lot of ways, one is “a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future”. I find this is the one people get lost in far too often. The expectation that something is going to happen, but align with their idea of an expectation. I have said many times and found that people expect what they expect. That is to say that they are not looking for astounding or amazing, they are looking for a series of events that they can explain, get behind, and believe in. Is that so wrong?
I like to think it is. From the level of setting your expectations to be so frivolous, or so mild mannered that you can’t gauge the astounding, amazing, or unexpected. I would rather believe in a world were every day has an action or event that creates astonishment, good or bad, and drives us all to see the wonders we live in, to see the amazement we can experience. I know, this may be too much, but why have expectations that are safe? Why live a life that is predictable.
A long time ago I was in a relationship that defined passion. Every moment was a gift, and every moment was as unpredictable as a million dice being dropped from a building. Still, as I woke each day I was thankful for all the moments I could spend, and when at last my heart was broken, that too was unexpected. It hurt, but still it was not a pain without a silver lining because I could not imagine a better slice of a life than I had, I could not imagine anything more positive that having the experience I did. This person said that one day I would be in a grocery store and they would walk into my arms once more. I know this will never happen, too much has changed and life changes us all, but my expectations each day were to have a new experience, and even with the bad I was not disappointed.
Life is a gift, don’t try to shake the box and guess too soon, open it when it is time, and if it is what you want or not, enjoy the experience.
So as the sun sets on another day, don’t expect another day. Expect to be alive now. Don’t wait another day, try and succeed now. Mostly love yourself enough that even when you stumble, you can get back up and succeed, no matter what.
Sleep sweet, love life, and happy Halloween…
