The sun sets on another day…
I watched the sunset. It was slow, deliberate and crawled to the west like a snail on a serious mission. There was no doubt it would make it, no doubt at all. Dozens of people were around me, some watched the sunset, others were lost in a technology enhanced miasmic shroud. As I watched an older woman came to the edge of the dune. She considered the step down, and instead stood. I stopped for a second and asked if she needed help down, she smiled and as I put out my hand she grasped it and stepped to where we took pictures. Some became more intent as the sun fell further, others still paid no heed or tried to take a selfie with a cell phone, only to try over and over and not understand why they were so dark.
The sun set in a brilliant flash of light, then was gone as the moon began to light up the sky. As we left I helped this woman up the short hill, and she thanks me and moved on. There was nothing expected, nor returned except a simple act of kindness, a helping hand for a moment. As the dozens dissipated into the night I sat in my car, watched twilight fade and considered how we all may really need a hand, and how we should put out our hand more often to help those who need it.
As the colors shifted and fewer and fewer cars remained I considered all of those times in my life that I had tried to do it alone, and a few times in my life that I did not help when I could have helped.
So as the sun sets on this spectacular day, let’s take a second and consider all the things we have to be thankful for. Let’s take a moment and enjoy people in general, and help them when we are able, and accept help when we need it. Take a moment and look at all the wonderful things in your life, and maybe a few that are not so wonderful, and let’s consider how we can be better, and better at being the people we need to be, and put out our hand, and touch the face of goodness, no matter what.
Sleep sweet, take a deep breath, and enjoy the moment…
