Innocently mischievous…

The sun sets on another day…

I was fascinated today as the clouds swallowed the sun, and something else. Well, it wasn’t the sunset, but instead a plethora of tiny terror, an energizer bunny style moment, a crazy crescendo of cunning critters. Yes, I watched chipmunks scurry all over the bird feeder.

So what, right? Little almost rats or mini squirrels they may be, but why be watching something like that for any amount of time. Well, I didn’t, it was only a few minutes, but it was enough to see the essence of play, the art of deviousness, and the purity of innocence.

Innocence is a tough word. so many equate it with the purity of a person, but innocence is simply not being aware of a great many things. I actually like the definition “lack of guile or corruption; purity” and it is there I think the chipmunks excel, they are playing to play, not for some selfish reason, they are playing for play, and to eat, and do little else. Innocence fits them, and I laughed at their antics for the time I watched.

This brings us to play. Ever watch a few chipmunks play ring around the tree. I honestly think they get dizzy and lose each other. Round and round she goes, where they stop, wait a minute, someone is missing, ohhh, he is above me. Now on top of me, wrestle wrestle ping pang, around the tree some more. It is a part of many people that is missing, the ability to play. Remember all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy, right? Well, playing like a chipmunk makes you young all over.

Then there is the deviousness. Ever read spy versus spy? It happened on my bird feeder. I could hear the music as they snuck up on the unsuspecting pile of seed. The seed did not cringe in terror as the eyes twitched and the little warriors jumped from hiding place to hiding place only to pounce quickly on their unsuspecting prey, fill their mouths and run away like roadrunner being chased by a pack of coyotes. Zoom, the best sneak thieves ever, if there was something truly to be stolen.

It was only a few minutes, but I will laugh for a while, why? Because a few rodents had some fun, and because I was there to laugh at them, with them, and for them as they ran, oblivious to me.

So as the sun sets on another day, maybe there is a lesson here. Maybe we need a little innocence. Maybe we need a little play. Maybe we need just a little mystery and deviousness in our lives. Maybe, just maybe, there is a formula there that works. Try it, laugh about it, and enjoy your day, no matter what.

Sleep sweet, play hard, and find the magic in your moments daily…
