The sun sets on another day…
It was beautiful outside as the sun set. I found myself looking to the sky with longing, trying to see past the horizon and then laughing to myself as I stopped and just enjoyed the colors all around me.
The purpose of 29,000 sunsets is relatively clear. I’ve told the premise to many people, and many people have appreciated it. I write here every day not because it makes me money or makes me famous or really makes me anything at all. Instead, I write to try to share a slice of a life that could open someone’s mind to possibilities.
For those that don’t know, if you knew you only had 29,000 sunsets in your life and today was day 28999. Tomorrow would be the last day, the end of all that is. What would you do differently, why aren’t you doing it now.
The rest gets pretty complicated. What means something to one person means nothing to another. We are not some mindless collective pushing in One Direction and hoping that everyone follows along with what we want. Instead, each of us has our own wants and needs and desires and along the way there are other things that play a part.
Of course, many people want money or power or combinations thereof. Some people want fame in someone pure anonymity. Some people want sheer chaos while others seek a peace that only the monks on high mountains could understand. There is no right answer. What I want out of life probably wouldn’t match up to very many people. In an old there was a quote, “Live fast, fight well, and have a beautiful ending” and that seems to resonate with me. I also am very fond of the song “the impossible dream” and for some reason have an overactive sense of duty that I would March into hell for a heavenly cause.
Is with that in mind that I’m sometimes sad that I cannot save everyone, and sometimes even sadder that people often cannot see past themselves. I define myself each day and try to be the best person that I can be. Sometimes I fail. I failed today because there are two phone calls that it got too late to make, and I should have made them earlier. With each failure I try to find a way to avoid that failure again.
Winding back to the start, I do not whine about the past. Instead I learn from it or at least try to. I do not pine about the future, for if I did I am counting on nonsense as the future is nothing until it becomes the past. I define me every day and I try to be the best me that I can be.
What will you do with your 29,000 sunsets? Will you find a path to greatness? Will you live for others or for yourself? Will you set a goal and make it happen?
So as the sun sets on another day, define yourself. Be someone that other people can be happy about. Help one person a day or at least one. Find joy and give out a little joy. Mostly, make your world the best world it can be defined by you and sealed by you. You are amazing, you are enough, let’s be more together, no matter what.
Sleep sweet, love life, and define the day…
