Why miss another?

January 22, 2019

Deafening silence…

The sun sets on another day…

I rushed towards the house today to see the sunset, only to miss it by minutes. As I pulled into the long drive and parked I saw the snow was still there, everywhere, and as I got out of the truck I noticed the silence had truly invaded the area.

It is interesting living in the woods. Silence can be a gift, or it can be a deafening roar. The sound of silence is unique, and as you strain to hear anything, you are only returned more silence. I have found this to be as evident at the beach, where the thundering waves create a barrier of silence that is almost an oxymoron. So loud you cannot hear anything but the beating of your own heart.

I know, I know, what does this have to do with the sunset I missed. Actually, what does this have to do with the sunset at all?

Maybe nothing, but maybe the silence of sunset is a gift to us as well. Maybe when the sun is setting we get a minutes peace, or even a moments peace. Maybe like the roar of the waves, the overwhelming power of the sunset can make us set aside our noise for a minute and just relax. Maybe. It is a good thought at least. What do you think?

Sometimes in the heat of a powerful moment we can find a bit of peace we didn’t even know was there. Perhaps a deafening silence is something we need from time to time, just to clear our minds. It is worth a try.

For me, tonight I listened and there was nothing there, so I made some noise, laughed as the sound was swallowed by the trees, and went inside. (It was cold after all).

So as the sun sets on another day, when offered a chance for a slice of silence, take it. We can all use a small getaway from time to time and the sound of silence can be that getaway. Laugh inside, listen to the silence and enjoy the evening, no matter what.

Sleep sweet, love life, and shhhhh
